The story of Aureliano
The emperor Aurelian took power in 270 with the empire split three ways and had reunited it by 275, which earned him the title Restorer of the World; he also built the walls that still ring central Rome. The name passed into Italian and Spanish. It reaches American records with Hispanic families and carries, for readers of Latin American fiction, a very specific association with a family of that name in a Colombian novel.

The Thayer test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aureliano's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Thayer climbed just as high around 1918, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Thayer's path sketches the road Aureliano is walking now.
Aureliano sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning and a documented Roman emperor of real consequence behind it.
- Aurelio is a shorter complete form available immediately.
- Every letter is said, so Spanish and Italian speakers read it correctly at once.
- Nine letters and five syllables is a great deal for early handwriting and for forms.
- The Colombian novel gives the name a very strong literary association.
- Americans will shorten it in speech and lose a syllable or two.
