The story of Thayer
Thayer is recorded as an English surname from the medieval period and arrived in Massachusetts very early: Richard Thayer came to Braintree in the 1630s and the family became substantial in New England. Sylvanus Thayer, a descendant, was superintendent of the United States Military Academy from 1817 to 1833 and rebuilt its curriculum and discipline so thoroughly that he is still called its father; buildings, awards and a school of engineering carry his name. That institutional visibility is part of why the surname converted to a given name in New England families, and the American record for Thayer as a first name is concentrated in the north-east.

people-army
The likeliest source is the Germanic personal name Theudhari, from theud, 'people, nation', and hari, 'army' — the same two elements that make Theodoric and Herman. It came to England through Old French as Taier or Teier and became the surname Thayer. Other derivations have been proposed, including an occupational one from a word for a tailor, but the Germanic personal name is the reading most surname dictionaries prefer.
