Where it comes from

The story of Augie

Augustus traveled through the Church as the name of saints and through the German-speaking world as August, one of the ordinary names of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. German and Scandinavian families brought it to America in numbers, and the American habit of shortening did the rest: August became Gus and Augie, and Augie began appearing in birth records as a name in its own right. Its peak in the middle of the twentieth century belongs to the generation born to those immigrant families, and the baseball men Augie Donatelli and Augie Garrido kept it in circulation long after.

Meaning

Venerable, majestic

Augie is a pet form of August and Augustus, from Latin augustus, meaning consecrated or venerable. The word was a title before it was a name: the Roman senate granted it to Octavian in 27 BC, and the month of August is named for the same man.

Augie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2021, with 28 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a warm, finished name that needs no shortening.
  • August and Augustus sit behind it as formal options on a birth certificate.
  • The Latin root is documented and the meaning is not in dispute.
What to consider
  • It reads as a nickname to many people, who will ask what it is short for.
  • The Auggie spelling is common enough that the name will be written both ways.
  • It carries a distinctly mid-century, immigrant-American register.
