Where it comes from

The story of Audriana

Saint Audrey's fair at Ely sold cheap lace called St Audrey's lace, contracted to 'tawdry' — so an English adjective for shoddy finery comes from a seventh-century abbess's name. Audrey was worn down from Æthelthryth over centuries. Audriana is a modern American compound and appears in the registers in current use.

Meaning

noble strength

The Audr- front descends from Audrey, from the Old English Æthelthryth — æthel, 'noble', and thryth, 'strength'. The -iana ending is a modern Latinate suffix. The Old English elements are settled; the compound is modern American.

About 1 girl in 12,962 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 18,059 for Audriana itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • That 'tawdry' comes from a saint's name is a first-rate word history.
  • Audrey and Anna are two short forms, both with large records.
  • The noble-strength meaning is transparent and strong.
What to consider
  • Adriana is a separate and much older name, easily confused.
  • Four syllables make it long for everyday use.
  • The compound is modern rather than inherited.
