Where it comes from

Our story of Audrianna

Ours, offered as ours. Two very different erosions meet here. Æthelthryth was a seventh-century English princess whose name English speakers ground down to Audrey over eight hundred years. Hadrianus was a Roman family name from a small Adriatic town, carried by the emperor who built the wall. Audrianna joins the two, which is a thing modern American naming does constantly — take two names with nothing in common and let the sound decide.

Meaningscholars disagree

noble strength; or from Hadria

Audrey descends from Old English Æthelthryth, noble strength. Adriana is from the Roman Hadrianus, of Hadria, a town that gave the Adriatic its name. The blend is modern American and takes from both.

Audrianna sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2011, with 276 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Audrianna went to 35 girls in 2025, but Audriana is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 124, which makes it the 836th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,231 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 12,962 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 45,922 for Audrianna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Anna and Ria are both complete names in their own right.
  • Two documented and genuinely old ancestors stand behind it.
  • Read correctly on sight by most English speakers.
What to consider
  • Nine letters and four syllables is a great deal for early handwriting.
  • Audrianna, Audriana and Adrianna are all in use and none is dominant.
  • The compound is modern, so no historical bearer stands behind it.
