Audry is what is left of a very long Anglo-Saxon name after a thousand years of English mouths. It began as Aethelthryth, four syllables and a sound English no longer has, and ended as two syllables that a child can spell. Along the way it left a common English word behind it.

How old is the name Audry?

Where it comes from

The story of Audry

Aethelthryth was a seventh-century queen of Northumbria who left her marriage for a convent at Ely and became one of the most popular English saints. Norman clerks could not manage her name and wrote it Etheldreda; English speakers wore it down further, to Audrey. Her feast was marked by a fair at Ely where cheap lace neckerchiefs were sold, called St Audrey's lace, and the phrase collapsed in the usual English way into a single word: tawdry. That is the same name, worn down twice. Audry is the shorter of the two modern spellings, dropping the e that English usually inserts before a final y.

Meaning

Audry sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1927, with 71 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Audry sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at sight and needs no explanation.
  • The history behind it is long, documented and genuinely interesting, which is rare for a two-syllable name.
  • It works in English and French with the same spelling and nearly the same sound.
What to consider
  • Audrey is the standard spelling and will be written instead on almost every form.
  • The spelling is recorded for boys as well as girls in the United States, so it does not settle which child is meant on paper.
  • The word tawdry comes from this name, and someone will eventually mention it.
