The story of Minerva
Minerva was one of the Capitoline triad and the Roman equivalent of Athena, patron of craftsmen, teachers and strategy. Her name was almost unused as a personal name until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when classical revival made Roman deities available to English-speaking families. American use rose through the 1880s and peaked around 1890.

mind, intellect
The usual reading connects Minerva to an Italic root meaning 'mind' or 'intellect', related to the Latin mens. But the goddess and her name were probably taken over from Etruscan Menrva, and Etruscan resists explanation, so the Latin reading may be a reinterpretation rather than an etymology.
