The story of Prudence
Prudentia and providentia are the same word, one worn down by use, and the virtue means the ability to judge what to do — Aquinas calls it the charioteer of the virtues. The Puritans took it as a given name alongside Patience, Temperance and Charity. It appears in American records in current use.
Meaning
foresight, practical wisdom
From the Latin prudentia, a contraction of providentia, 'foresight', from providere, 'to see ahead'. It is one of the four cardinal virtues and in Aquinas means practical judgment, not timidity. The modern sense of caution is a narrowing. The etymology is documented.
