Where it comes from

The story of Aubrei

Aubrey came to England with the Normans as a man's name, ran quietly for eight centuries as both a given name and a surname, and then crossed to girls in the United States in the 1970s, a shift usually credited to the Bread song of 1972. Once it was a girls' name the respellings began, and Aubrei belongs to the last stage of that process: the vowel is unchanged, the sound is unchanged, only the written ending is exchanged for one that English does not otherwise produce. That is the point of it. A spelling with no native precedent cannot be confused with anything, and Aubrei reached its best year in 2014.

Meaning

elf power, or ruler of the elves

From the Germanic Alberic, combining alf, elf, with ric, power or ruler. The elves in question are the beings of Germanic legend rather than anything decorative; Alberich is the dwarf-king of the Nibelung stories. Norman French turned it into Auberi, which English took as Aubrey.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aubrei went to 18 girls in 2025, but Aubrey is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 2,021, which makes it the 153rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,172 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 795 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 89,293 for Aubrei itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A thousand-year-old Germanic etymology, unusual for a name spelled this way.
  • Bree is a ready-made and independently popular short form.
  • Distinct on paper from the very common Aubrey and Aubree.
What to consider
  • The -ei ending suggests an -ay sound to readers who know German or Norwegian names.
  • Aubrey, Aubree, Aubry and Aubrie all share the sound, so spelling it aloud becomes routine.
