Where it comes from

The story of Arushi

The dawn goddess is one of the few Indo-European deities reconstructible from more than one branch, and the evidence is unusually good. The names correspond by regular sound laws. The poetry corresponds too: in the Rigveda Ushas is the daughter of heaven who uncovers herself and drives away the dark, and Greek and Latin epithets for Eos and Aurora — rosy-fingered, saffron-robed — match Vedic formulas closely enough that scholars reconstruct shared poetic phrases, not just shared words. Old English Ēostre is attested only once, by Bede, who says a month was named for her; the word Easter follows. Arushi peaks in America in 2005.

Meaning

Sanskrit "red, of the dawn"

From Sanskrit aruṣī, the feminine of aruṣa, red or ruddy, used of the dawn and of the horses that draw the sun. The related Ushas is the Vedic dawn goddess, cognate with Greek Eos, Latin Aurora, Lithuanian Aušrinė and Old English Ēostre, from whom the word Easter probably comes.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Arushi went to 13 girls in 2025, but Aarushi is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 22, which makes it the 938th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,947 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 73,058 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 123,636 for Arushi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and connects to a very old mythological figure.
  • Aru is an easy short form.
  • It is soft, three syllables and easy for English speakers to approximate.
What to consider
  • English speakers move the stress off the first syllable.
  • Arushi and Aarushi are competing transliterations.
  • It is rare in the United States and will need spelling out.
