Where it comes from

The story of Aarushi

Comparative linguistics can rebuild a handful of ancient religious figures, and the dawn goddess is the surest of them. Vedic Ushas, Greek Eos, Roman Aurora and Lithuanian Ausrine are all the same name in different mouths, and the hymns to Ushas in the Rigveda and to Eos in Homer describe her in the same terms: she opens the doors, she is born again each morning, she is late and always awaited. The same root gives the English east, the direction of the reddening, and, through a related Germanic form, Easter. Arushi belongs to that vocabulary rather than to the goddess directly: it is the redness itself, the color of the sun's horses in the oldest surviving Indian poetry.

Meaning

Sanskrit arushi, the red of first light

From Sanskrit arusha and arushi, reddish or the red glow of dawn, used in the Rigveda of the horses of the sun. The doubled aa marks a long vowel in transliteration. The American peak is 2006.

Aarushi sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2006, with 59 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aarushi went to 9 girls in 2025, but Arushi is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 22, which makes it the 938th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,169 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 73,058 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Aarushi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is documented in the oldest layer of Indian poetry.
  • Aaru and Ru are both natural short forms.
  • Three syllables with an open ending.
What to consider
  • The doubled a is a length mark that English readers misread.
  • Arushi and Aarushi both appear in the records.
  • It is unfamiliar to most American readers.
