Where it comes from

The story of Armond

Hariman was a common Frankish name and became Hermann in German and Armand in French, where it was ordinary from the Middle Ages. Cardinal Armand Jean du Plessis — Richelieu — carried it at the height of French power, and the younger Armand of Dumas's La Dame aux Camélias made it a romantic name in the nineteenth century, which is when English-speaking countries took it up. Armond appears in American records from the 1880s and peaks almost immediately, in the same generation that used Alphonse, Adolph and Emile. It has run at a low level ever since, and is used in African American families as well as in French-descended ones.

Meaning

Army man, bold soldier

From the Germanic name Hariman or Hermann, from hari, army, and man, man. Old French turned it into Armant and Armand. The reading is standard. The -ond spelling is an American variant of the French -and, which is silent at the end in French anyway.
