Arly reached #949 in 2003, which is higher than its obscurity suggests, and the reason is that it belongs to a Mexican-American family of names built on a genuinely biblical but very obscure root. Areli appears once in Genesis, as a son of Gad, and the name has had a second life in Latin America that has nothing to do with that verse.

Where it comes from

The story of Arly

Mexican naming has drawn on obscure Old Testament names for a century, often through Protestant and evangelical communities, and several of them — Areli, Abisai, Jared, Aczel — are far more common in Mexico than in any English-speaking country. Arely and Arlette then reinforced each other, and Arly appears as the shortest member of that group. Its American peak in 2003 sits in a period when Yareli, Areli, Arely and Arlette were all rising together, which suggests the whole cluster was working as one fashion rather than as separate names.

Meaningscholars disagree

Hebrew, uncertain: possibly "lion of God" or "heroic"

Areli is listed in Genesis 46 among the sons of Gad. The name is usually connected to ariel, from ari, lion, and el, God, or to a word meaning heroic. Neither is settled, and the biblical figure is named and never mentioned again. Whether the modern Spanish Arely and Arly descend from that name or are independent formations is itself disputed.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, two syllables, and said identically in English and Spanish.
  • It connects to a real if obscure biblical name.
  • It is uncommon without being difficult in any way.
What to consider
  • The etymology is genuinely unsettled, both in Hebrew and in the Spanish line.
  • Arely, Areli, Arlie and Arly are all in use.
  • It reads as a clipping to English speakers.
