The story of Arianah
The word arya has had a difficult modern history and its ancient use is worth stating precisely. It was a self-designation used by the Indo-Iranian peoples, appearing in the Rigveda and in Old Persian royal inscriptions, where Darius calls himself an Aryan of Aryan descent. It named a linguistic and cultural group rather than a race, and the territory it applied to is what is now Iran, Afghanistan and parts of Central Asia. Nineteenth-century European scholars borrowed it as a term for the whole Indo-European language family, which was already a stretch, and twentieth-century racial theory turned it into something else entirely, with catastrophic consequences. The country's own use is continuous and unbroken: Iran has been Iran to Iranians since antiquity, and the 1935 request that the world stop saying Persia was a request to use the older name.

Old Persian aryanam, of the Aryans
Ariana descends from Greek Areia and Ariana, the classical names for the eastern Iranian territories, from Old Persian aryanam, land of the Aryans, which is also the source of the modern name Iran. The word arya was the Indo-Iranian peoples' name for themselves and meant something like noble or of our people. Ariana is separately read as an Italian feminine of Ariano and as a form of Ariadne. Arianah adds a terminal h. It peaks in 2010.
