Arian
Feminine · “Welsh arian”
Arian is given to both — 1,578 girls and 6,712 boys since 1880. See Arian as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Arian is Welsh for silver and also for money, because they are the same word. French does the same thing with argent, and Spanish uses plata, silver, for cash. Languages that once ran on silver coin kept the metal's name for the abstraction, and English is the odd one out with a word from a Roman temple.

The story of Arian
The metal-for-money pattern is widespread. Welsh arian and French argent both mean silver and money together, from Latin argentum, and the country Argentina is named for the metal it was hoped to yield. Spanish uses plata, silver, for money in ordinary speech across Latin America. Sanskrit and several other languages do the same. English is unusual: money comes from Latin moneta, a title of Juno, beside whose temple on the Capitol the Roman mint operated, so the English word is named after a building rather than a metal. Silver itself is Germanic and of uncertain origin, possibly borrowed from a non-Indo-European source along with the metal. What the pattern records is a period when a coin's value was its weight in silver, and the two ideas had no reason to be distinguished.

Welsh arian, silver
Arian is the Welsh word for silver and for money, and is used as a unisex given name in Wales. It may separately be a form of Arianwen or of the Latin Arianus. The unrelated English word Aryan, from Old Persian arya, is spelled differently and comes from an entirely different source, though the two are close enough in sound to be confused. It peaks in the American data in 1999.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Carmina test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Arian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Carmina climbed just as high around 1976, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Carmina's path sketches the road Arian is walking now.
Arian sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
