Where it comes from

The story of Apryl

The Roman calendar is easier to read than its month names. The year originally began in March, which is why September, October, November and December are named seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth and sit in the ninth to twelfth positions: two months were added at the start, January and February, and the numbering was never fixed. March is Mars, May is probably Maia, June is Juno, July and August were renamed for Caesar and Augustus, and February is named for a purification ritual. April is the one that resists. The Romans offered aperire, to open, which is the sort of explanation ancient writers produced routinely and which modern linguistics rarely accepts; the alternative, that the name came from Etruscan along with much else in the calendar, is plausible and unproven.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Aprilis, the Roman month, has no established etymology. The classical derivation from aperire, to open, is a Roman guess of the same kind they made about many of their own words, and an Etruscan origin connected to Aphrodite has been proposed. Apryl is a modern American respelling; its peak is 1981.

Apryl sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1981, with 120 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Apryl went to 9 girls in 2025, but April is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 566, which makes it the 477th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,630 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,840 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Apryl itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The month is universally understood and needs no explanation.
  • Two syllables and five letters.
  • The spelling is distinctive without changing the sound.
What to consider
  • April is the standard spelling by an enormous margin.
  • The month's own meaning is genuinely unknown.
  • The 1981 peak dates this respelling.
