Our reading is that the near-total absence of function words from the name stock is worth noticing. Languages divide their vocabulary into content words, which name things and actions, and function words, which do grammatical work: articles, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, determiners. Names are drawn almost exclusively from the first class, and when a name collides with an English word it is nearly always a noun or an adjective. Function words are a closed set, they are short, they are unstressed in speech, and they carry no imagery, so nothing recommends them for naming. The handful of collisions that do occur are accidents of spelling from other languages, as here. It also means that a name landing on a function word is read differently: a reader meeting Rose sees a flower, and a reader meeting Any sees a word that cannot be a name at all, which is a harder problem.
