The story of Antwon
The gens Antonia gave Rome Mark Antony, and Saint Anthony of Egypt and Saint Anthony of Padua carried the name through Christendom. French made it Antoine, and Antoine crossed to America with French colonists and, far more numerously, entered African American naming in the twentieth century as one of the French-derived names — Andre, Marcel, Antoine, Jermaine — that were widely used from the 1960s onward. Antwon is the spelling that records the American pronunciation: it appears from the 1970s, peaks in the mid-1980s alongside Antwan, Antwaun and Antwain, and falls away with the rest of the family.
Meaningnot established
Not established; the Roman family name Antonius has no agreed source
Antwon is a phonetic respelling of Antoine, the French form of Antonius. Antonius is an old Roman gens name, probably Etruscan, and its meaning is genuinely unknown; the common gloss priceless or praiseworthy comes from a Renaissance guess connecting it to Greek anthos, flower, which no serious source accepts. The honest answer for every name in this family is that the meaning is lost.
