Antonios
Masculine · “Not established”
Antonios keeps two things English lost: the Greek nominative -s, and the absence of an h. Anthony is a misspelling that stuck — the th was added in the Renaissance on the false assumption that the name came from Greek anthos, flower. Antonios shows the name before that happened.

The story of Antonios
The gens Antonia produced Mark Antony, and the name spread across the Roman world as an ordinary personal name long after the family itself mattered. Its Christian career comes from Antony the Great, the Egyptian hermit of the third and fourth centuries, and later from Anthony of Padua. Greek kept the classical shape, Antonios, with the -os nominative ending that Greek grammar requires; Latin and its descendants dropped it, giving Antonio, Antoine, Antoni and Anton. The intrusive h entered English and French spelling around the sixteenth century and eventually changed the English pronunciation too, which is why Americans say the th and the British generally do not. American figures for Antonios peak in 1972 with Greek-American families.
Meaningnot established
Not established — a Roman family name of probably Etruscan origin
Antonius was one of the great Roman gentes, and Roman family names of that type frequently came from Etruscan, a language whose vocabulary is only partly recovered. No meaning for Antonius is established. The readings often given — priceless, praiseworthy, flower — are all later inventions: priceless comes from a fanciful link to Greek anti and onios, and flower comes from the Renaissance misspelling with th, from Greek anthos. The honest answer is that the meaning is unknown.

The Cirilo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back.
