Anam
Feminine · “Irish anam”
The Irish for a soul friend is anam cara, and it was a technical term. Early Irish monasticism required every person to have one: a spiritual companion who heard confession and gave direction, and a saying attributed to Brigid holds that a person without a soul friend is like a body without a head.

The story of Anam
Naming the soul after breath is nearly universal across Indo-European and beyond. Latin anima and animus are breath and mind; Greek psyche is from a verb meaning to blow, and pneuma is wind or spirit; Hebrew ruach and nephesh both start from breathing; Sanskrit atman is related to a root for breath. The observation behind it is not mysterious: breathing is what distinguishes a living body from a dead one, and it stops at the same moment everything else does. The Irish word came in with Latin and Christianity, so anam is a loanword rather than a native term, which is worth noting because the concept it names was reorganised at the same time. The soul friend practice belongs to the same import: a system of individual spiritual direction that the Irish church developed in an unusually thorough form.

Irish anam, soul
Irish anam, a soul, is from Latin anima, breath and soul, related to Greek anemos, wind. The phrase anam cara, soul friend, is a term from early Irish Christian practice. Anam is separately an Arabic and Urdu name from a word for a gift or blessing, and a Persian one. Which applies to a given bearer is not recoverable; it peaks in the American data in 1991.

Anam's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Akina climbed just as high around 1976, and its whole arc is on record.
