The story of Anaid
Anahita's cult was one of the most widespread in the Iranian world and Artaxerxes II built temples to her across the empire in the fourth century BC, which is unusual: Zoroastrian practice generally avoided images. In Armenia she became Anahit and was the principal goddess, with a major temple at Eriza whose gold statue Mark Antony's troops looted in 34 BC. Greek writers identified her with Artemis and with Aphrodite depending on which aspect they were describing. After Armenia's conversion in the fourth century the temples were destroyed, but the name survived and Anahit remains a common Armenian woman's name. That a deity's name outlives her worship by seventeen centuries is not unusual; the same is true of Brigid in Ireland and of Aodh, and it is one of the ways religions leave residue in a language.

Old Persian Anahita, the immaculate one
Anahita is the Zoroastrian divinity of waters, fertility and wisdom, from an Old Iranian element meaning unstained or immaculate. The Armenian form is Anahit. Anaid is a variant of it and is also, separately, the name Diana written backwards, which is how the name is often understood in Spanish-speaking families. Both readings are current; it peaks in the American data in 1990.

The Kaisa test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Anaid's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kaisa climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kaisa's path sketches the road Anaid is walking now.
Anaid sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
