Our story of Amyla
Ours, offered as ours. Amyla sits on top of a genuinely old French word. Amée was the past participle of the verb to love, used as a name in medieval France — the beloved one, said as a name rather than a description. England took it as Amy in the thirteenth century and has kept it since. Amyla borrows the opening and adds an ending that belongs entirely to the present. The love in it is real and at three removes, which is a fair description of most modern naming.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No source language is established. The Am- opening is documented through Amy, from Old French amée, beloved, and Amelia, from a Germanic root meaning work. The -yla and -ila endings are modern American elements. A chemical prefix of the same spelling is unrelated.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Amyla went to 45 girls in 2025, but Amila, Amylah and Amilah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 203, which makes it the 757th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,632 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 7,918 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 35,717 for Amyla itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Tyree test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amyla's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tyree climbed just as high around 1977, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tyree's path sketches the road Amyla is walking now.
Amyla sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
