Our story of Amilah
Ours, offered as ours. Arabic distinguishes two roots that English ears cannot keep apart: ʿ-m-l, to work, giving amal for work and amila for a worker; and a-m-l, to hope, giving amal for hope. Both are written amal in Roman letters and neither transliteration marks the difference. So a name that means either hope or work depending on a consonant English cannot hear is a fair illustration of what transliteration costs.
Meaningscholars disagree
one who works; or hopeful
Arabic amila means to work or act, and the participle amila describes a woman who works. A separate root gives amal, hope. The two are distinct in Arabic and the modern name may draw on either.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Amilah went to 31 girls in 2025, but Amila, Amyla and Amylah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 203, which makes it the 757th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,703 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 7,918 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 51,847 for Amilah itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Damara test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amilah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Damara climbed just as high around 1980, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Damara's path sketches the road Amilah is walking now.
