Amrita
Feminine · “the undying”
Amrita and ambrosia are the same word. Sanskrit builds it from a prefix meaning not and a root meaning dead — the undying thing, the drink that makes you so; Greek built ambrosia from exactly the same two pieces in its own language. Two branches of one ancient family arrived at the same idea and the same construction, and neither borrowed it from the other.

The story of Amrita
The churning of the ocean is one of the great set pieces of Indian myth: gods and demons take opposite ends of a serpent, use a mountain as a churning stick, and pull for a very long time, and the ocean gives up a series of treasures ending with the amrita. The story is told in the Mahabharata and carved on temple walls from Cambodia to Karnataka. As a name it is used across India for daughters, and it reached American records in 1973 with Indian migration.
Meaning
the undying; the nectar of immortality
From the Sanskrit a-, not, and mrita, dead — so deathless. The word names the drink produced when the gods and demons churned the ocean of milk, and drinking it is what made the gods immortal. The Greek ambrosia is the same compound in Greek, from the same Indo-European roots, and means the same thing.

The Ragen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amrita's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ragen climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ragen's path sketches the road Amrita is walking now.
Amrita sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
