Amory looks like Latin love and is not. It comes from the Germanic Amalric — amal, the name of the Ostrogothic royal house, plus ric, power — so the first syllable names a dynasty rather than an emotion. Fitzgerald gave it to the hero of This Side of Paradise in 1920.

Where it comes from

The story of Amory

The Amali were the royal clan of the Ostrogoths, and Theodoric the Great belonged to them; their name became a productive element in Germanic personal names long after the dynasty ended. Amalric was carried by Visigothic and later Crusader kings — two kings of Jerusalem bore it in the twelfth century — and the Normans brought Aimery and Emery to England. It became an English surname, and then, in the American pattern, a given name again. Its literary life is what keeps it visible: Amory Blaine is the protagonist of F. Scott Fitzgerald's first novel in 1920. The American figures for the name peak recently, in 2020, in the current revival of soft-sounding surname names.

Meaning

Germanic "power of the Amali"

From Amalric or Amalaric, combining amal — the dynastic name of the Amali, the ruling family of the Ostrogoths, of debated further meaning, possibly work or vigor — with ric, ruler or power. It gave French Amaury and Aimery, English Amory and Emery, and the surname Emery. The resemblance to Latin amor, love, and French amour is a coincidence of sound; no etymology connects them, and readings of Amory as loving are folk etymology.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a documented Germanic etymology tied to a named royal house.
  • It is soft and current-sounding while being genuinely old.
  • Rory works as a short form and stands alone.
What to consider
  • Almost everyone will assume it means love, and it does not.
  • It is easily confused with Emory, Emery and Avery in speech and writing.
  • It reads as unisex in current American usage.
