Where it comes from

The story of Amory

The Amali were the ruling dynasty of the Ostrogoths, and Theodoric the Great, who governed Italy from 493, belonged to them; Cassiodorus wrote their genealogy back seventeen generations to make the point. The element became a name-forming one across the Germanic world, giving Amalric, Amalasuntha and Amalberga, and it traveled with the Goths into Spain and with the Franks into France. Two kings of Jerusalem were called Amalric in the twelfth century. French wore it down to Amaury, English to Amory and Emery, and it became a surname and then, in America, a given name again, used for both sexes and rising in the last few years.

Meaning

Germanic amal and ric, work and power

From Germanic Amalric, built on amal, the name of the Ostrogothic royal house and generally connected to a word for work or vigor, and ric, power. It gave French Amaury and English Amory and Emery. The American peak is 2020.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Amory went to 8 girls in 2025, but Amori is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 30, which makes it the 930th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,987 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 53,576 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Amory itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
