The story of Amilya
The merger happened in English rather than on the Continent. German kept Amalia and Emilie distinct; Italian kept Amalia and Emilia; English absorbed both, spelled them close enough to confuse, and by the eighteenth century treated Amelia and Emilia as variants of one name. Handel wrote an opera on a German Amelia; Fielding published Amelia in 1751; and the name entered general English use with its Germanic origin already obscured. That obscuring is why dictionaries of names often give industrious or striving for Amelia, which is a reading of the wrong etymology. The respelling Amilya peaks in 2012.

Germanic, from the dynastic element amal
Amelia derives from Amalia, a short form of Germanic names in amal — the name of the Amali, the ruling clan of the Ostrogoths, of further meaning debated, possibly work or vigor. The same element gives Amory and Emmerich. Emilia is separate, from the Roman family name Aemilius, generally traced to aemulus, rival or emulating. Amilya is a modern American respelling of Amelia.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Amilya went to 14 girls in 2025, but Amilia, Amillia and Amylia and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 235, which makes it the 727th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,764 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 6,839 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 114,805 for Amilya itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
