Amilia
Feminine · “Two roots: Germanic amal”
Amilia is a respelling of Amelia, a name the Hanoverians carried into English in the eighteenth century and which has never really left. The sound is four soft syllables with the weight in the middle, and it shortens easily — Amy, Mia, Millie all live inside it. The i in place of the e is the newer part of the story; the rest goes back well over a thousand years.

The story of Amilia
The older thread is Germanic: Amalia, built on amal, a element that turns up in a whole family of early names. It traveled into the Latin-speaking world and met Aemilia, the feminine of an old Roman family name, and the two have been blurring into each other ever since. The English form Amelia arrived with the Hanoverian court in the eighteenth century — a daughter of George II bore it — and Henry Fielding put it on the cover of a novel in 1751, which fixed it in English reading habits. Amilia is a modern American respelling of that same name, keeping the sound and swapping one vowel.

Two roots: Germanic amal, 'work, effort', and Latin Aemilia, from a Roman family name
Amelia is usually traced to the Germanic element amal, meaning work or industriousness, through the old name Amalia. But it has been tangled since at least the Middle Ages with the Latin Aemilia, the feminine of the Roman family name Aemilius, which is itself often connected to aemulus, 'rival'. Both readings are serious, and dictionaries have argued the point for a long time.

uh-MEE-lee-uh
Also said uh-MEEL-yuh, with the last two syllables run together — both are standard. The i in the first syllable does not change the sound from Amelia, though it occasionally prompts a first-try uh-MIL-ee-uh from strangers.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Amilia went to 158 girls in 2025, but Amillia, Amylia and Amilya and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 235, which makes it the 727th most-given girls’ name of the year — 655 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 6,839 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 10,173 for Amilia itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Khushi test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amilia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Khushi climbed just as high around 2003, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Khushi's path sketches the road Amilia is walking now.
Amilia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Sounds identical to a name almost everyone already knows, so it is never mispronounced on introduction, only occasionally on first reading.
- Comes with several ready-made short forms — Mia, Amy, Millie — each of which works on its own from childhood through adult life.
- Recognizable across Spanish, Italian, French, German and Portuguese, all of which have their own settled version of the same name.
- A documented line running back through medieval Europe, which is more than most respellings can claim.
- Amelia is by far the dominant spelling, so this version will be corrected and re-corrected for life. Most people who hear the name will type the e without thinking.
- She will likely be the only Amilia in her school, and quite possibly in a room with an Amelia or two — rare on paper, familiar to the ear.
- The wave behind this spelling is very recent, so nearly all the Amilias in the country are children. That has no bearing on the child, but it does mean few adults share the exact spelling.
