Dottie
Feminine · “gift of God”
Dottie is the tail end of Dorothy, and it has been shortened that way for a long time: Dorothy to Dot, Dot to Dottie. Two beats, both open, the second one lifting — the same ending that keeps Maggie, Sadie and Hattie in the mouth so easily. It has never stopped being used since it first appeared in American records, and it is turning up again on birth certificates after a long quiet stretch.

From Dorothea to Dottie
The story of Dottie
The root name is Greek Dorothea, the feminine of Dorotheos, and it traveled through the Christian east and into Latin before reaching English as Dorothy in the sixteenth century — venerated in Christian tradition as Dorothea of Caesarea. English speakers clipped it almost at once, and Dot is recorded as its everyday short form well before the Victorian era was over. Dottie is that clip with the affectionate -ie ending added back on, the same move that turned Margaret into Maggie. In American usage it stepped away from Dorothy and became a given name in its own right, written on records without the longer form behind it.
Meaning
gift of God
Dottie carries the meaning of Dorothy, from Greek Dorothea: dōron, 'gift', and theos, 'god'. The same two elements appear reversed in Theodora.

The Millicent test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dottie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Millicent climbed just as high around 1927, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Millicent's path sketches the road Dottie is walking now.
Dottie is on its second act. Revived names age gently: the generation that wore them first is far enough away that the name feels classic rather than dated.

The trade-off
- Spells itself from the sound and says itself from the spelling — rare in a name this uncommon.
- Comes with a ready-made formal option: Dorothy on the paperwork, Dottie everywhere else, or the reverse.
- An unbroken record in American use since the earliest years of national name-keeping, so it is familiar without being common.
- The underlying name exists across German, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish and Greek, which gives it a foothold abroad.
- Short forms already established: Dot, and Dora through the longer name.
- It is built as a pet name, with the -ie ending that marks Maggie and Sadie. Some people love that at every age; others want a longer name on the birth certificate to grow into, and Dorothy is right there if so.
- The near-twin spelling Dotty doubles as British slang for slightly scatterbrained. The -ie spelling sidesteps it, but the joke will occasionally get made anyway.
- It is still strongly represented among much older generations, so it may read as a grandmother's name to some ears — which is exactly the route Hazel and Nora took back into nurseries.
- A child with this name is unlikely to meet another in her school, which cuts both ways: no last-initial problem, and a lot of first-time hearings.
