Arwen
Feminine · “noble maiden”
Arwen was made, not inherited: J.R.R. Tolkien built it inside Sindarin, one of the Elvish languages he spent decades constructing, for Arwen Undómiel in The Lord of the Rings. It has the shape of the Welsh names Tolkien loved — Bronwen, Gwen, Arwyn — because he modeled Sindarin's sound on Welsh, and you can hear that kinship in the two clean syllables.

The story of Arwen
The name first appears in The Lord of the Rings, published in the mid-1950s, where Arwen is the daughter of Elrond. Tolkien did not borrow it from any older register; he assembled it from the vocabulary of Sindarin, the Elvish language he had been developing since the First World War era, whose consonants and mutations he patterned on Welsh. It reached American parents through the paperback readership that grew through the 1960s and 70s, and again through the film adaptations at the turn of the millennium. Both waves are visible in the record: the name arrived quietly with readers, then climbed with viewers.
Meaning
noble maiden
Tolkien's own notes give the Sindarin elements: ar- 'royal, noble' and gwen 'maiden'. The same gwen/gwyn element ('white, fair, blessed') sits inside real Welsh names such as Bronwen and Arwyn, which is why the name sounds older than it is.
Pronouncing Arwen
AR-wen
Stress on the first syllable, with the 'a' of car. Some speakers place the stress on the second syllable instead; Tolkien's own Elvish rules put it first.

The Stefany test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Arwen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Stefany climbed just as high around 1991, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Stefany's path sketches the road Arwen is walking now.
Arwen is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Two syllables, spelled the way it sounds — most English speakers read it correctly on the first try.
- A single, very recognizable source, so the name arrives with its own story already attached.
- Short enough to need no nickname, while still offering Ari and Wren if one is wanted.
- Same spelling works across English, Spanish, German and Dutch, which matters for families spanning more than one language.
- Sits comfortably beside genuine Welsh names in the Gwen family, so it does not sound freshly minted.
- The Tolkien connection is total: nearly everyone who recognizes the name will ask about the books or the films, and the child will field that question for life. Some families love that; some would rather the name stood on its own.
- It is close enough to Arwyn, Arden and Erwin to be misheard, and the stress can land on either syllable, so spelling and pronunciation will occasionally need repeating.
- Rarity cuts both ways: a child with this name will very likely be the only one in the school, which means no surname initial to share, and also no one else to be confused with.
