Alydia
Feminine · “from Lydia”
Lydia sold purple. The Acts of the Apostles introduces her as a dealer in purple cloth from Thyatira — an expensive trade, since the dye came from sea snails and took thousands of them to color one garment — and she is the first person in Europe the text records as converting. Her name is a region: Lydia was a kingdom in western Anatolia, and calling someone by it meant calling them the Lydian woman.

The story of Alydia
Lydia entered English use with the Reformation and became a standard name, going quiet in the twentieth century and returning strongly in the twenty-first. The A- in front of it belongs to a habit American naming has used for a long time — adding a light front syllable to an existing name, which changes its rhythm and gives a family a version of its own. Alydia appears in the record from 1918 in tiny numbers and rose much later, peaking in 2014 alongside Lydia's own revival.
Meaning
from Lydia
From the ancient kingdom of Lydia in what is now western Turkey — a wealthy state credited with inventing coined money. The name means a woman from there, and it was probably not a personal name at all in the passage where it first appears, but an identification: the Lydian, the one from Thyatira.

Four syllables, stress on the second. The added front syllable is light and quick and does not compete with the base for emphasis, which is what a prefix of this kind is for.

The Nyeisha test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alydia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nyeisha climbed just as high around 1993, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Nyeisha's path sketches the road Alydia is walking now.
Alydia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It shortens to a complete and currently fashionable name.
- The kingdom behind it invented coinage, which is a genuinely good fact to carry.
- Four open syllables with no hard consonant anywhere.
- Ally and Lyd are both available and belong to different registers.
- Lydia is far commoner and will be assumed to be what was meant.
- Alydia, Alidia and Alydiah all appear, so the spelling has to be given.
- The prefix reads as decorative to some people, which is a judgment a child will occasionally meet.
