Alvena
Feminine · “elf-friend”
Alvin means elf-friend. The Old English Ælfwine joins the word for an elf — which meant something considerably more serious than it does now, a being of real power — to the word for a friend, and it was a name English kings and bishops carried. Alvena is the feminine made from it in nineteenth-century America, using the ending that was making feminines everywhere at the time.

The story of Alvena
Ælfwine was a common Old English name and survived the Conquest as Alwin and Alvin. American naming in the nineteenth century made feminines from men's names on an industrial scale, and the -ena and -ina endings did most of the work: Alvena, Wilhelmina, Josephina, Clarena. Alvena was already in the record when American statistics began in 1880 and peaked in 1883, which places it at the very front of the available data and squarely in that habit.
Meaning
elf-friend
From the Old English ælf, an elf, and wine, a friend. Elves in early English belief were powerful and dangerous rather than small and charming, and a name claiming friendship with them was claiming something. The same element opens Alfred and Elvis, both of which carry the elf without anyone noticing.
