The story of Alon
When Hebrew was rebuilt as a daily language in Palestine in the early twentieth century, its speakers wanted names that were Hebrew but not biblical — not the patriarchs and prophets of the diaspora, but words from the land itself. Trees, flowers, weather and landforms became names in a single generation: Alon, Oren, Ilan, Erez, Dror, Gal. Alon was among the most successful and has been steadily common in Israel since the 1950s. It reaches American records with Israeli families and in small numbers from American Jewish families wanting a Hebrew name that was not Aaron. The 1970s peak in the data is modest and reflects both.
Meaning
Oak tree
From Hebrew ʾallôn, oak. The word appears in the Bible as a place name — Allon-bacuth, the oak of weeping, where Rebekah's nurse was buried — and as a common noun, but its use as a personal name is modern, part of the revival of Hebrew as a spoken language.

The Craven test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Craven climbed just as high around 1956, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Craven's path sketches the road Alon is walking now.
Alon sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
