Alexzandria
Feminine · “Greek alexein and aner”
The Library of Alexandria did not burn down in one fire. It declined over centuries, through funding cuts, the expulsion of scholars, a fire during Caesar's campaign, and the gradual loss of a city's willingness to pay for it. The single catastrophe is a better story than the truth and the truth is more useful.

The story of Alexzandria
The library was part of the Mouseion, a research institution founded under the early Ptolemies and funded by the crown, and its collapse was administrative before it was physical. Ptolemy VIII expelled scholars in 145 BC in a political purge, and the institution never recovered its position. Caesar's fire in 48 BC destroyed warehoused books at the docks and possibly part of the collection. Roman emperors reduced the funding. The daughter library at the Serapeum was destroyed in 391 during religious violence. By the time of the Arab conquest in 641 there was little left to burn, and the famous story of the caliph ordering the books used to heat the baths first appears six hundred years later. What actually killed it is more familiar than a fire: an institution stopped being paid for and quietly ceased to exist.
Meaning
Greek alexein and aner, defending men
Alexandria is named for Alexander the Great, who founded it in 331 BC, from Greek alexein, to defend, and the stem andr-, man. As a personal name Alexandria is a modern American use of the place name rather than a form of Alexandra, though the two are constantly merged. Alexzandria inserts a z, which duplicates the s sound already contained in the x. It peaks in 1996.
