Alexis was a man's name for two and a half thousand years. It still is in Greece and Russia, where Alexei is entirely masculine. What changed it in America was a television series: a character called Alexis Carrington arrived in 1981, the show was watched by tens of millions, and within five years the name had crossed to daughters and stayed there. The y in this spelling marks that crossing.

Where it comes from

The story of Alexys

The name's history is entirely masculine until very recently: Alexios was a Byzantine imperial name, Alexei a Russian one, and Alexis a French men's name. The American reversal is unusually well documented — the show that caused it went on the air in 1981 and the name's use for girls climbs from that year. The y-spelling belongs to the same movement and does a specific job: it signals, on paper, that the child is a daughter, which the standard spelling no longer does reliably.

Meaning

defender, helper

From the Greek alexein, to defend or ward off — the same verb that opens Alexander. Alexis is the shorter name built on it and was borne by a Greek comic poet, a saint and several Russian tsars, all of them men.

Alexys sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2001, with 273 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alexys went to 5 girls in 2025, but Alexis is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 552, which makes it the 489th most-given girls’ name of the year — 14,453 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,912 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Alexys itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Alex and Lexi are both available and belong to different registers.
  • The Greek verb behind it is documented and the meaning takes one word.
  • The y marks the name as a daughter's, which the standard spelling has stopped doing.
  • It is recorded for boys as well as girls, following the older tradition.
What to consider
  • Alexis is the standard spelling and will be written on nearly everything.
  • The change is inaudible, so the letters have to be dictated each time.
  • The name is dated fairly precisely by the television series that moved it.
