Alyosha is a man in Russian. It is the affectionate form of Alexei, and it is what Dostoevsky calls the youngest Karamazov brother through eight hundred pages. The same sequence of sounds, written Alesha, is an American girl's name peaking in 1984. A diminutive can change sex simply by crossing a language border.

The story of Alesha
Slavic languages build diminutives on a scale English does not attempt: Alexei gives Alyosha, Alyoshenka, Lyosha, Alyoshka, each with a different degree of warmth or condescension, and a competent speaker deploys them precisely. The forms are strongly sexed. Alyosha is male; the female equivalents built on Alexandra are Sasha, Shura and Sanya, of which Sasha is itself unisex in Russian and has become almost entirely female in English. What happens when these forms travel is that the grammar that sexed them is left behind, and English speakers assign them by sound. An ending in -a or -sha sounds female in English, so Sasha, Misha and Alesha all drift female in America regardless of what they were at home. The drift is one-way and it is driven purely by the shape of the ending.

Greek alexein, to defend
Alesha is most often an American respelling of Alicia or Aleisha, which descend through Latin Adelais from Germanic adal, noble. It is also read as a form of Alisha and Aleesha. Separately, the Russian Alyosha is a diminutive of Alexei, from Greek alexein, to defend or ward off, the same root as Alexander. The American name is more likely to belong to the first family than the second, but the spelling supports both.

The Ardeth test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alesha's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ardeth climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ardeth's path sketches the road Alesha is walking now.
