Aleeah
Feminine · “exalted (Arabic)”
Aleeah is one sound sitting on top of two unrelated languages. Arabic gives aliya, high or exalted; Hebrew gives aliyah, an ascent. They are not the same word, they are not cognate, and the English spelling cannot tell you which one a family means.

The story of Aleeah
Both source names are ancient in their own traditions, but Aleeah as a written form is entirely a product of English-language records, where a family writes what it hears rather than transliterating a script. The doubled e is the English convention for a long vowel and does no work in either Semitic language. In American use the spelling arrived with the general Aaliyah wave of the mid-1990s, and it reached its own best year in 2012, a decade later, which is the usual delay between a name and its phonetic respellings. Households using it include Muslim families, Jewish families, and a large number for whom it is simply a pretty sound with no source language at all.
Meaningscholars disagree
exalted (Arabic), or ascent (Hebrew)
Arabic aliya is the feminine of ali, from the root -l-w, height. Hebrew aliyah is a noun of ascent from the root -l-h, to go up, and is also the standard word for immigration to Israel and for being called up to the Torah. Both are genuine, neither is a variant of the other, and the phonetic English spelling erases the distinction that Arabic and Hebrew script would keep.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aleeah went to 18 girls in 2025, but Aleah, Alea and Aleea are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 344, which makes it the 637th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,688 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 4,672 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 89,293 for Aleeah itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Lane test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aleeah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lane climbed just as high around 1982, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lane's path sketches the road Aleeah is walking now.
Aleeah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Spells itself from the sound, which is the whole reason this form exists.
- Belongs comfortably in Muslim, Jewish and secular American households alike.
- The rhythm matches Amelia, Sophia and Aaliyah, so it is never conspicuous.
- Aleah, Aliyah, Aaliyah and Alia all share the sound and will be written instead.
- Because two languages claim it, an explanation of the meaning will depend on which family is asking.
