Where it comes from

The story of Alecia

Alice was one of the standard medieval English names, revived hard in the nineteenth century, and the Latin-looking Alicia entered English separately. American use of Alicia climbed steeply from the 1960s and peaked in the 1980s, and the spelling family bloomed around it: Alecia, Alycia, Alisha, Alysha, Aleisha, Aleesha. Alecia peaks in 1987, at the height of the parent name's run. Alecia Beth Moore, who records as Pink, is the spelling's best-known bearer and was born in 1979, right inside the family's rise.

Meaning

Noble kind, of noble sort

From the Germanic Adalheidis, from adal, noble, and heid, kind or sort — the same name as Adelaide. Old French shortened it to Aaliz and Alix, and Latinized forms gave Alicia. The reading is settled. Alecia is an American respelling of Alicia with no separate history; the e in the second syllable is a spelling choice for a reduced vowel.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alecia went to 22 girls in 2025, but Alesia, Aleesia and Alesya are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 81, which makes it the 879th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,675 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 19,843 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 73,058 for Alecia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
