Our story of Alesia
Ours, offered as ours. The siege of Alesia is one of the more extraordinary military operations on record: Caesar built two complete rings of fortification, one facing in at Vercingetorix and one facing out at the relief army, and held both. Gaul fell with it. The Greek alexein, to defend, that gives Alessia its meaning is a coincidence of sound with the place — and an ironic one, since Alesia was defended and lost.

defender
Alessia is the Italian feminine of Alexis, from Greek alexein, to defend. Separately Alesia was the Gaulish oppidum where Vercingetorix surrendered in 52 BC; the place name is Celtic and unrelated. Both are documented.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alesia went to 32 girls in 2025, but Alecia, Aleesia and Alesya are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 81, which makes it the 879th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,473 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 19,843 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 50,227 for Alesia itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Alfreda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alesia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Alfreda climbed just as high around 1925, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Alfreda's path sketches the road Alesia is walking now.
Alesia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
