Akshaya
Feminine · “Sanskrit akshaya”
Akshaya Tritiya is a day so auspicious that anything begun on it is held not to diminish. The word means imperishable, from the negative prefix a- and kshaya, decay, and the festival is one of the busiest days of the year for buying gold in India, on the reasoning that what is acquired then will not be lost.

The story of Akshaya
The festival falls on the third day of the bright half of the month of Vaishakha, usually in April or May, and it is treated as one of the most auspicious days in the year for beginnings: marriages, journeys, business ventures and purchases. Gold buying is the most visible modern expression, and the Indian jewelry trade does a substantial share of its annual business in a single day. Several traditional events are placed on it: the beginning of Treta Yuga, the day Vyasa began dictating the Mahabharata, and in Jain tradition the day Rishabhanatha ended a year-long fast. The underlying logic is straightforward: a day named for imperishability confers imperishability on what happens in it. The word itself is entirely ordinary Sanskrit and the prefix behind it is one of the most widely shared pieces of Indo-European grammar.

The Byron test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Akshaya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Byron climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Byron's path sketches the road Akshaya is walking now.
