Aizah
Feminine
Aizah is a name of the Urdu-speaking world and its diaspora — Pakistan, northern India, Britain and North America — where it has been fashionable since the 2000s alongside Aiza, Ayeza and Ayzal. Its American record starts almost from nothing in the 2000s and peaks in the mid-2010s, and it belongs to a small group of names whose popularity in South Asia is far better documented than their origin.

Our story of Aizah
The interesting thing about Aizah is how visibly it was chosen for its shape. Urdu naming has a long tradition of Arabic and Persian names, and a strong sense of which sounds belong: an initial A, a light middle, and a terminal -a or -ah that marks the name as feminine. Aizah fits that template perfectly while belonging to none of the classical lists, which is why it spread so fast in the 2000s among families who wanted something that sounded traditional without being their grandmother's name. The terminal -h is worth noticing: in Urdu transliteration it stands for a real letter and is not decorative, which distinguishes Aizah from American names where a final h was added for looks. The name is modern, but the grammar it was built from is very old.

Not established
Not established. Popular sources offer 'noble', 'respectable' and 'to replace' and attach the name to more than one Arabic root, but the readings compete and none is supported by a standard Arabic dictionary entry that yields this form. It is sometimes treated as a variant of Aiza and sometimes linked to Aisha, which have different sources again. The honest position is that Aizah is a well-used modern name in Urdu-speaking communities whose etymology has not been settled.

Pronouncing Aizah
AY-zah
Two syllables, stress on the first, with the ay of day and an open final a; the h is not pronounced separately. Some families say EYE-zah with the vowel of eye, and both are current, so this is one of the names where the family's own saying is the only authority.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aizah went to 21 girls in 2025, but Aiza, Ayza and Aysa and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 202, which makes it the 758th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,964 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 7,957 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 76,537 for Aizah itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Shevonne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aizah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Shevonne climbed just as high around 1979, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Shevonne's path sketches the road Aizah is walking now.
Aizah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is short, easy to say and holds its sound in both Urdu and English.
- The spelling is close enough to Aiza and Ayza that all three are recognized as the same name.
- It carries a clear cultural identity without being difficult for English speakers.
- The meaning is not established, and the glosses offered online contradict one another.
- Two pronunciations circulate, AY-zah and EYE-zah, and the spelling does not decide.
- Several near-identical spellings are in use, so records and correspondence will drift.
