Where it comes from

The story of Aissata

Aisha bint Abi Bakr was Muhammad's wife and one of the most consequential figures of early Islam, a transmitter of a great many hadith and a political actor in the first civil war; her name went wherever Islam went. Across the Sahel it took local shapes: Aïssata, Aïssatou, Aïcha, Aïchatou. The trans-Saharan trade routes carried Islam into the Mali and Songhai empires from the eleventh century, and the name has been ordinary in the region for many hundreds of years since. American records show Aissata from the 1990s, arriving with West African immigration to New York, Ohio and the Washington area, and its peak in 2013 belongs to that community's growth.

Meaning

Alive, living

From Arabic ʿĀʾisha, from ḥayya, to live — the reading is settled and means living or she who lives. Aïssata and Aïssatou are the West African forms, chiefly Fula, Mandinka and Soninke, with the -ata and -atou endings that these languages add to borrowed names. The meaning belongs to the Arabic original and traveled with it.

Pronouncing Aissata

eye-SAH-tah

Three syllables, stress in the middle. The dieresis in Aïssata marks that the a and i are said separately rather than as one sound; American records drop it, which invites the misreading AY-suh-tuh.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, short and good, and travels with the name everywhere.
  • It is instantly recognized across West Africa and the Arabic-speaking world.
  • The syllables are open and contain no sound English cannot make.
What to consider
  • American records drop the dieresis, and without it the first two letters mislead.
  • Aissata, Aissatou, Aicha and Aisha are all used in the same families.
  • It is unfamiliar outside West African communities in the United States.
