Our story of Ailynn
The -lynn ending has a peculiar property: it is the only modern American name element that has been continuously productive for eighty years while meaning nothing the whole time. It arrived in the 1930s attached to Marilyn, Carolyn and Evelyn, where it was part of the inherited name rather than an addition. By the 1950s it had detached, and Lynn stood alone as a top-hundred girls' name. By the 1980s it was a suffix again, available to anything: Ashlynn, Jaelynn, Brooklynn, Kaitlynn, Ailynn. Three complete changes of grammatical status in three generations, with no change of sound. Very few elements in any language move that fast, and the reason this one could is that it never carried meaning to begin with — a suffix with nothing to lose can be repurposed freely, and this one has been.

No documented source for the whole. The -lynn ending descends by sound from Welsh llyn, 'lake', by way of the place name and the mid-century American name Lynn, but it carries nothing in this position. The Ai- front has several possible sources — Irish Aileen, Japanese Ai, Spanish Ailin — and none can be shown for this spelling. Aileen itself is a real name, an Irish form of Evelyn or Helen, and Ailynn may be a respelling of it, which is the most plausible single route.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ailynn went to 20 girls in 2025, but Aylin, Ailyn and Ailin and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 1,126, which makes it the 283rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,634 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 1,427 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 80,363 for Ailynn itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Dabney test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ailynn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dabney climbed just as high around 1948, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dabney's path sketches the road Ailynn is walking now.
Ailynn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
