Aylin
Feminine · Turkish roots · “Moon halo”
Aylin is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 16,872 girls against 63 boys since 1880.
Aylin is built on one of the oldest words in Turkish: ay, the moon. It belongs to a whole family of moon-names used in Turkey — Ayla, Aysel, Aynur — and it has since made a second home in Spanish-speaking families, where it is often written Aylín. Five letters, two syllables, and a vowel opening that carries easily in both languages.

The story of Aylin
Aylin is Turkish, one of a cluster of names formed from ay, 'moon', that spread widely in Turkey over the twentieth century alongside Ayla, Aysun, Aynur and Aysel. It is also used in Azerbaijani. From there it traveled to the Americas, and it is now well established among Spanish-speaking families, frequently spelled Aylín with the stress on the final syllable. In the United States its strongest footing is in Texas, California and New York — the record of a name arriving through more than one community at once.
Meaning
Moon halo — the ring of light around the moon
The first element, Turkish ay, 'moon', is certain, and Turkish naming tradition reads the whole name as the halo or aureole of moonlight. The exact history of the ending is less securely explained than the moon itself.

Pronouncing Aylin
eye-LEEN
That is the Turkish and Spanish pronunciation, with the weight on the second syllable. Many American families say AY-lin instead, rhyming the first part with 'day'. Both are in real use, so it is worth deciding which one you want and saying it that way from the start.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aylin went to 885 girls in 2025, but Ailyn, Ailin and Ailynn and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 1,126, which makes it the 283rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 62 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 1,427 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 1,816 for Aylin itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Gayla test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aylin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gayla climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gayla's path sketches the road Aylin is walking now.
Aylin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Short, five letters, and spelled the way it is spelled everywhere it is used — no long or shortened variant competing for the standard form.
- Works in Turkish and in Spanish without adjustment, and stays readable in English.
- Uncommon enough in American classrooms that a child is unlikely to share it with anyone in her year.
- Built on a transparent element: ay, the Turkish word for moon, which parents can point to and explain.
- Two pronunciations circulate — eye-LEEN and AY-lin — so she may spend her life correcting one or accepting both.
- Ayleen, Aylene, Aileen and Eileen all sound close and are separate names with separate histories; expect some spelling confusion, especially over the phone.
- If the Spanish accented form Aylín matters to you, know that American forms, databases and school systems will often drop the accent.
- The name's American record is short and its bearers here are mostly young, so it will read as a child's or young woman's name for some years yet.
