The story of Aicha
Aisha bint Abi Bakr was Muhammad's wife and, after his death, among the most significant figures in early Islam — thousands of the hadith are transmitted on her authority, and she led a faction in the first civil war. That made her name one of the most given in the Muslim world. The Aicha spelling belongs to Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Senegal, where French was the colonial administrative language, and it reaches United States records from exactly those countries.
Meaning
living; alive, thriving
Arabic Aisha comes from a root about living and being alive, and it means one who lives or thrives. The reading is documented and undisputed. The spelling Aicha, sometimes with a diaeresis as Aïcha, is the French transliteration used across the Maghreb, where French orthography records the Arabic sh as ch.

Pronouncing Aicha
AH-ee-shah
Three syllables, stress on the first, with a small break between the first two vowels. The ch is French spelling for an sh sound; English speakers reading it cold say AY-chah, which is wrong on both counts.

Line the two peaks up, and Lania's path sketches the road Aicha is walking now.

The trade-off
- A documented meaning and an unusually significant historical bearer.
- Recognized across the whole Muslim world without any explanation.
- Five letters, and easy for English speakers once the ch is explained.
- English speakers read the ch as in church, which is not the sound.
- Aicha, Aisha, Ayesha and Ayşe are the same name in four very different spellings.
- The diaeresis in Aïcha is dropped in American records, which loses the vowel break.
