Where it comes from

Our story of Adyson

The -son surnames became girls' names in a specific order and by a traceable route. Madison came first, boosted by a 1984 film in which a mermaid takes the name from a street sign, and it climbed into the American top ten for girls. Addison followed in the late 1990s, Emerson and Jackson later and more thinly. In each case the name arrived as a surname, was heard as a sound rather than parsed, and the -son element — which is the whole point of the word — became inaudible. That is normal: English speakers do not hear the ham in Birmingham or the wich in Norwich either. What makes this case worth noticing is that the element is not obscure or worn down. It is the ordinary modern word son, spelled exactly as it is spelled elsewhere, and it has simply stopped registering. Adyson peaks in 2007.

Meaning

English "son of Addy", a form of Adam

Addison is a patronymic surname, Addy plus -son, from Adam. Madison is son of Maud, Jackson son of Jack, Emerson son of Emery. All four are used for American girls in substantial numbers. Adyson is a respelling with a y for the second vowel; the change carries no meaning and does not affect the sound.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
