Adleigh

Our story of Adleigh
Our story of Adleigh is about a suffix outgrowing its name. Leah in Old English was a clearing cut into woodland, and it ended thousands of English place-names and then the surnames taken from them — Ashley, Bradley, Hadley, Ainsley. American naming borrowed the ending, spelled it the longest available way, and began attaching it to openings that have no English land behind them at all. In Adleigh the ending is nearly twice the length of the name it is finishing. That is a suffix that has become the main event, which is a genuinely odd thing for a piece of a word to manage.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The ending is genuine: Old English leah, 'woodland clearing', through English place-names and the surnames from them. The Ad- opening most likely comes off Adley, an English surname, or off Adelaide and Adeline, from Germanic adal, 'noble'. Neither is documented as the source, and no derivation for the compound has been recorded.
Pronouncing Adleigh
AD-lee
Two syllables, stress on the first. The -leigh is said simply as 'lee'; the gh is silent and has been for centuries, which is why Adley and Adlee exist alongside it.

The trade-off
- Addie and Leigh are both ready short forms and both are established names.
- Two easy syllables that every English speaker says correctly at first sight.
- The ending is a genuine English element rather than an invented sound.
- Adleigh, Adley, Adlee and Addley are all in use and none is standard.
- Seven letters spell two sounds at the end, so the name is given letter by letter every time.
- It has no documented meaning, so anything offered for it has been supplied.
