Adisyn
Feminine · “English surname”
Adam is a pun. God forms the adam from the adamah, the man from the ground, and Hebrew makes the connection audible in a way English cannot: the word for a human being and the word for soil are the same three letters with an ending. Addison means son of Adam, and Adisyn is that with the son taken out.

The story of Adisyn
The Genesis account is doing something the English translation cannot reproduce. God forms the adam from the dust of the adamah and breathes life into him, and a Hebrew reader hears the two words as obviously related, in the way an English reader hears human and humus if the words are put side by side, which as it happens are also related through Latin. Biblical Hebrew does this repeatedly: it explains a name by a pun rather than by an etymology, and the pun is usually better than the etymology would be. Eve is explained as the mother of all living, Jacob as the heel-grabber, Moses as the one drawn out, Babel as confusion. In each case the text is making a point rather than reporting a derivation, and modern scholarship treats the biblical etymologies as literary rather than linguistic.
Meaning
English surname, son of Adam
Addison is a patronymic surname, son of Adam or of Addy, a medieval pet form of it. Adam is Hebrew for a human being, related to adamah, ground or earth, and the connection is made explicit in Genesis 2:7. Adisyn is a modern American respelling that removes the visible son. The name is given almost entirely to girls in current American use and peaks in 2008.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
