Rebekkah
Feminine
Rebekkah doubles a consonant that neither Hebrew nor English doubles. The Hebrew has a single letter there and English has always written one; the doubling is an American addition that looks like a transliteration convention without being one. The two standard spellings of this name do have a real difference behind them, and it is not this.

The story of Rebekkah
The two English spellings come from two different routes into the language. One follows the Hebrew directly and appears in English Bibles in the Old Testament; the other follows the Greek and Latin of the New Testament, where the same person is mentioned in a letter of Paul, and it arrives with a c instead of a k. English translators kept both, in the same book, a few hundred pages apart, and so the language ended up with two standard spellings of one name and no rule about which to use. Families divided along the same line for centuries, with the k spelling favored in households that took their names from the Hebrew scriptures and the c spelling elsewhere. The doubled k in this version belongs to neither tradition and was added much later, for the ordinary American reason that it makes the name look more distinctive on paper.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The Hebrew name's meaning has never been established. Readings connecting it to a word about tying or binding are proposed in reference works and are guesses; the word does not appear elsewhere in a way that would settle it. That is the ordinary situation for the oldest layer of Hebrew names, and it is worth saying plainly rather than repeating a gloss that no scholar would defend.

Fashion outlook
Rebekkah sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is universally known and the name has never needed pronouncing twice.
- Becca is immediate, current and works from childhood onwards.
- It carries one of the oldest continuously used names in the Western world.
- Four spellings are in wide circulation and this is the rarest of them.
- The doubled k corresponds to nothing in either source language, which is worth knowing before defending it.
- Your child will spell the name out for life and will still find it written three other ways.
