Where it comes from

The story of Adison

The Genesis account has God forming the adam from the dust of the adamah, and the pun is unmistakable in Hebrew and invisible in English. It is one of a set: the woman is ishah because she was taken from ish, a man; Eve is Chavah because she is the mother of all living, chai. The name Adam then traveled through Christianity to become an ordinary European name, produced the medieval English diminutive Addy, and from that the surname Addison — which is where Joseph Addison, co-founder of The Spectator in 1711, got his. The name crossed to American girls in the 1990s and rose sharply; Adison peaks in 2007.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
